The US state of Texas has mounted its biggest ever rescue effort in the wake of Hurricane Ike.

Search teams are sifting through debris and inspecting flooded homes after the storm left widespread destruction in Galveston and Houston.

About two million people left the region, but about 2,000 had to be rescued and there've been three reported deaths.

Evacuees have been warned not to return home until it's safe.

State and local officials have asked the federal government to speed up relief efforts.

President George W Bush says he'll be heading back to his home state.

"I will be going down to Texas on Tuesday to express the federal government's support, sympathy on the one hand and support on the other, for this recovery effort and rebuilding effort," he said.

"This is a tough storm and it's one that is gonna be, it's gonna require time for people to recover."
