Malaysia's opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, says he has the numbers to force the first change of government in his country for 50 years.

Our South East Asia correspondent, Karen Percy, reports Mr Anwar's People's Alliance requires at least 31 government members of parliament to defect in order to oust the long-standing Barisan Nasional coalition.

At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur Mr Anwar maintains that he has the defectors he needs. But as yet, no government MPs have come out publicly.

Mr Anwar has sought a meeting with the Prime Minister, Abdullah Badawi, to ensure a smooth transition of power.

But Mr Abdullah has refused saying there is no threat to his government.

However Mr Abdullah is under pressure from elements of his own party to step down from the leadership earlier than the 2010 deadline agreed to.

Mr Anwar formally returned to politics last month after a 10 year absence.
