UN food body providing $US2m food aid to Pacific

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation is providing more than $US2 million to Pacific island countries for emergency food assistance.

It's part of the FAO's initiative on soaring food prices to help poor countries put in place measures to boost food supplies.

The FAO says many impoverished rural people have been forced to reduce their consumption of basic foods because of the sharp rise in prices over the past 12 months.

The increase cost of oil is also preventing farmers from investing in food and agricultural production.

The FAO funding will provide farmers, womens groups and schools from 14 Pacific islands with rice seeds and other planting material as well as animals and farm processing equipment.
