Medical association welcomes inquiry into Australia's north

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) says any inquiry into public health in the Northern Territory would be an advantage.

The opposition Country Liberals are urging the Government to support their call for a parliamentary inquiry into problems facing the Territory's health system.

It follows a Coroner's recent finding that a nurse shortage contributed to the death of a patient at Royal Darwin Hospital.

The AMA's Northern Territory branch vice-president Rob Parker says the inquest looked at a particular issue, rather than the broader role of the hospital, such as its outreach service to remote areas.

"Certainly the outreach service is one that seems to have suffered in recent years within the hospital and the outreach services are very important in providing expert clinical services," he said.
