A 34-year-old Japanese man has been detained for allegedly hurling explosive-laden fire extinguishers towards the Imperial Palace in central Tokyo.

Officers patrolling near the tightly guarded palace are said to have heard two blasts in the early hours of the morning, and found the man standing by a parked truck with a make-shift launch pad on the back.

No injuries or damage were reported.

Local news agencies quote the former serviceman as saying he just wanted to have fun, and stir things up.
