Regulator required for Australia's aviation industry: expert
Updated
An Australian aviation expert says Australia is heading for a major airline accident unless a regulator is appointed to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
A critical Senate report, released yesterday, recommended the Australian Government install a management board to oversee the organisation and review its funding.
But Dick Smith, a former CASA chairman, says creating a new board will only work if it has the power and the will to make changes.
"We are heading for a major airline accident if you don't have a proper regulator," Mr Smith said.
"We don't at the moment, something has to be done about it.
"It not only needs a board but it needs a hands-on board with competent people on it who will stand up to the big airlines."
