Report warns of climate change impact on Asia Pacific coastal areas

A report by international aid agency World Vision says the negative effects of climate change are becoming more evident in coastal areas across the Asia Pacific Region.

The report highlights Papua New Guinea as one of the more vulnerable nations and says more needs to be done to to prepare low lying coastal communities for changes to their environment.

Professor Hugh Davies from the University of PNG's Geology Department says the government must also take action to safeguard or move the country's low lying infrastructure.

"You look at any of our coastal towns, you see the bulk fuel installations are only a metre or so above sea level and maybe some of the towns like Wewak and Vanimo, the hospital and the power stations are just a metre or so above sea level, if you get 20 or 30 centremetres, which means at high tide or low atmospheric pressure, it means all those facilities are threatened," he said.
