Malaysia's Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar has confirmed that a local blogger is being detained for two years without trial under the country's security law for insulting Islam.

He has been sent to the Kamunting Detention Camp in northern Perak State.

Southeast Asia correspondent Karen Percy reports Raja Petra Kamaruddin was denied a trial under Malaysia's strict Internal Security Act, which allows indefinite detention on the grounds of national security.

He regularly posted damning articles of the government on his website Malaysia Today.

He's also supported the opposition movement led by Anwar Ibrahim, which is posing a challenge to the government which has ruled for more than 50 years.

Mr Raja Petra and two others were arrested just before Mr Anwar revealed that he had enough government members allied to force a change of government.

Mr Raja Petra's lawyers say his detention is illegal.

They have filed a habeus corpus case in the courts.
