Vietnam bars boats from Halong Bay as Typhoon Hagupit approaches

Vietnam has barred tourist and fishing boats from its famed Halong Bay and ordered an evacuation of areas at risk of flash floods from Typhoon Hagupit.

Vietnam deployed rescue teams and equipment across nine northern provinces, hours after Hagupit triggered a "once-in-a-century storm tide" which forced 100,000 to flee in southern China.

The government fears heavy torrential rains will significantly raise the risk of flash floods and land slides in the nine mountainous provinces.

Hagupit is expected to make landfall early on Thursday.
