The UN chief, Ban Ki-moon, has welcomed the release of seven political prisoners in Burma as part of an amnesty for more than 9,000 inmates.

But he insists all politial detainees must be freed.

Among those released was the country's longest-serving political prisoner, U Win Tin.

Mr Ban however has reiterated that all political prisoners should be released and all citizens of Burma should be able to enjoy political freedoms.

He says these are necessary steps towards the process of national reconciliation and dialogue.

The opposition National League for Democracy spokesman has vowed the party will appeal this week to the military for the release of party leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
