Human rights groups say that the number of dissidents in Burma's jails has nearly doubled in the past year.
A report by two rights groups says that there are now more than 2,000 political prisoners in the country.
It says that almost a thousand people were arrested during last year's monk-led uprising.
The groups are asking the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to take urgent action to secure the prisoners' release.
