Papua New Guinea's autonomous Bougainville region will reportedly have a new president by Christmas.

The PNG electoral commission says a by-election will decide who replaces former president Joseph Kabui, who died from a heart attack in June this year.

Nominations close on November 7, with polling to begin on November 30.

The vote count is expected to be completed by December 22.

Meanwhile, PNG efforts to initiate programmes on climate change development and adaptation will receive a boost through a funding assistance package from Norway,for nine countries,valued $US35 million.

The National newspaper says apart from PNG, countries to benefit include Indonesia, Panama, Bolivia, Congo, Para-guay, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zambia will benefit from the package.
