Irish prepare to launch Solmons phone network
Updated
The telecommunication operator, Digicel, is gearing up to launch its mobile phone network in Solomon Islands after the government's move to deregulate the industry.
It follows the successful launch of Digicel services in Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu and Fiji.
The Irish-owned operator's move into the Solomons has till now been blocked by Our Telekom, which was issued an exclusive licence by the former Kemakeza Government.
But the new government supports the wave of telecommunications deregulation sweeping the region, and is expected to launch moves to enable deregulation during next month's sitting of Parliament.
