The Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, says China will help insulate Australia's economy against the global slowdown.

Kevin Rudd says he has recently spoken to the Chinese prime minister, Wen Jiabao, about the economic outlook.

Mr Rudd says Chinese demand for resources will help Australia's economy.

"China has a huge impact on the economies of the East Asia region as well as now the global economy," he said.

"My understanding is that China will continue to drive strong economic growth for its own national purposes but that is also good for countries like Australia because China is such a major trading partner of ours."
