Professional boxing returned to the ring in Papua New Guinea earlier this week, after a prolonged absence.

PNG Professional Boxing President, Bernard Fong, says the group already has five athletes in it's stable, heavy weights Rickson Yamo and John Korak and light heavyweight Dickson Dia, middleweight Richard Thomas and lightweight Thomas Kagili.

The first fight is against Inodnesian boxers at an event in Jayapura on October 24, then an exhibition night on November 15 in PNG and finally the national professional boxing championships on February 28, where the winners qualify for a World Boxing association fight.

Fong says the window of opportunity has opened.

"We try to develope amateur boxing again but the current management thay don't want us involve, so we thought okay we straight to develope professional boxing," Fong said.

"We are now taking some of the best boxers around the country, we accommondate them, we feed them and everything and prepare them for all tournaments now."
