Chinese miner defends workers entry into PNG
Updated
A Chinese mining company accused of causing a security scare in Papua New Guinea has denied claims its expatriate engineers were entering the country without being checked by immigration officials.
The Post-Courier reports that management at the Ramu nickel-cobalt mine in Madang Province say the company complied with local laws on the hiring of foreign staff.
Earlier the National Intelligence Organisation said the PNG government had exempted expatriates coming to the country to work for the mine from security, customs and immigration checks.
Around one thousand locals are employed by the mine which is being constructed.
