New E-learning centre for Australia's NT
Updated
Australia's deputy prime minister, Julia Gillard, will open a new E-learning facility at the Batchelor Institute in the Northern Territory.
The Batchelor Institute specialises in training indigenous students.
About 3000 indigenous students attend the institute just outside Darwin.
Courses on offer include primary school teacher education, primary healthcare worker training, and a newer option of nursing.
The institute pays for many students to fly in from their communities and live on campus for a number of weeks a year.
A spokesperson for the institute says the new $AUS 2.9 million E-learning and research building could change the way remote students are trained, opening up possibilities for student-teacher video conferencing.
For now, however the facility will offer on-campus students state-of-the-art educational tools.
Today, Julia Gillard will also announce federal funding for further technology upgrades at the institute.
