Calls for workers to adopt Australian indigenous languages

Updated November 20, 2008 14:14:32

An Aboriginal research organisation says all workers in indigenous communities should be made to learn aboriginal languages.

The call has been made in a paper titled "Are We Heading in the Right Direction?" by Richard Trudgen from Aboriginal Resource and Development Services.

He says the Australian Government should shift its focus from just infrastructure in aboriginal communities.

Mr Trudgen says if more emphasis is not placed on education and communication, a 17 year life expectancy gap between indiginous and non-indiginous Australians, will never be cut.
