The Prime Minister of Samoa and the finance minister of Tonga have been told Pacific Island economies can no longer afford to carry loss-making State-owned enterprises. The ministers, along with a delegation from Fiji, are attending a two-day retreat on Waiheke Island in New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf, organised by the Asian Development Bank. On Sunday, the meeting was briefed on the results of a new Asian Development Bank report on experiences with State-owned enterprise reform in those three countries. Jemima Garrett asked Laure Darcy, one of the report's authors, why Pacific Island economies can no longer afford to carry loss-making State-owned enterprises.
