Fiji businesses expect tough times

Businesses in Fiji are preparing for an expected rough year ahead. Last September, the global financial crisis led to a loss of confidence in financial markets, and the closure of many banks in the Western world. But a number of business forecasters predicted the Pacific region would feel little effect. But Fiji, with its reliance on tourism, a barely existing sugar industry and some remaining garment manufacturers has been hit hard. Some tourist operators are already forecasting a significant drop in visitor numbers for the year ahead.
