Samoa lifts ban on inter-school sport imposed after student violence

Samoa's Cabinet has lifted a ban on inter-school sports with warnings to Principals that they must stop the endemic violence between students, which has spilled into the markets and onto the streets, threatening public safety. The government banned interschool sports in April last year after a fight led 23 arrests, and to a female student being hospitalised for petrol bomb burns. The Minister of Education, Sport and Culture says principals have been told to jointly write a strict new behavioural code and ensure it is enforced.
