PNG farmers asked to grow more vanilla

Updated March 17, 2009 09:30:19

A New Zealand food import company is trying to persuade more farmers in Papua New Guinea to plant vanilla as the bean is the second most expensive spice after saffron, but its cultivation can be very labour intensive. Adel Yousef, managing director of Raw Energy, which imports food from around the world, is in the PNG town of Wewak to ask local people to consider growing vanilla. He says wild price swings for the bean over the past five years have settled down, and PNG growers are well placed to profit from the strong global demand.
