Fiji's attendance at UN sponsored security conference questioned
Updated
A United Nations sponsored conference on security governance in the Pacific region is finishing today in Tonga, with some asking questions about why Fiji was allowed to send a delegation to the forum. Representatives from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga and Fiji were in attendance, with Fiji represented by interim Defence Minister, Ratu Epeli Ganilau and other interim-government representatives. One of the core issues being discussed is the strengthening of parliamentary oversight of the security sector. Since Fiji does not have a democratically elected parliament, some believe its attendence raises some questions.
