The Papua New Guinea government has asked for outside help to deal with thousands of people left homeless by volcanic eruptions. A series of eruptions five years ago forced 15,000 people to flee their homes on Manam Island, off the country's north coast.

The chairman of PNG's National Disaster Committee, Manasupe Zurenuoc, says the Manam Resettlement Authority has failed to do its job. He says the government has now asked the United Nations for advice.
