Australian Greens say aid contribution falls short

Australia's veteran Greens party leader, Bob Brown, says the Rudd government has failed in its foreign aid responsibilities despite a slight increase for aid in last week's Federal budget. The budget included an increase in aid to Papua New Guinea, bringing its contribution to $AUD414 million, while aid for the rest of the Pacific rose to $670 million. But it's a smaller increase than had been promised, and aid groups says it falls well short of needs.

Senator Brown says Australia should be sharing much more of its wealth, particularly amid forecasts that the global recession will force millions of people into poverty.
