Mariana Trench Monument still years away
Updated
It could be another two years at least before the guidelines for the marine protection area known as the Mariana Trench Monument - near Saipan and Guam - is finalised. Former United States President George W Bush created the protected regions, however authorities from the US mainland are still working with local authorities to finalise the arrangement.
The areas protected vary from 50-kilometre zones off three of the most northern islands of the Northern Marianas, to the trench itself as it heads further south toward Guam. Angelo Villagomez from the Northern Marianas environment group Friends of the Monument says more work is needed to help clear-up a number of issues.
