Solomons opposition wants RAMSI review before new deal

The Solomon Islands opposition leader wants an immediate suspension of the partnership framework agreement between the Government and the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, or RAMSI. Manasseh Sogavare says any re-direction of RAMSI's assistance has to be done through parliament.

Acting Prime Minister Fred Fono has dismissed Mr Sogavare's accusations - saying Solomon Islands is a sovereign country, and the decisions of its government are not made in Canberra. The Solomon Star newspaper reports Mr Fono as saying the accord takes cooperation between Solomon Islands and RAMSI to a new height.

Mr Sogavare also says the agreement signed last week should have waited until the current nation-wide comprehensive review of the Australian-led mission has been completed. Liam Cochrane asked Mr Sogavare why he wants the implementation of the partnership agreement suspended.
