Australia's whaling position not negotiable: Garrett

The pre-amble to this year's meeting of the International Whaling Commission has begun, with meetings between members of its Scientific Committee continuing through to Friday. Already we can be sure that it will not resolve long-standing disputes between whaling and anti-whaling nations. The so-called "Small Working Group" that's been trying to look for a compromise issued its pre-meeting report in mid-May - admitting that it hasn't been able to live up to its goals.

The group says it wants another year to try to broker an agreement. But Australia's Environment Minister Peter Garrett says Australia's position isn't up for negotiation.
