In a wide ranging interview on New Zealand television the Australian foreign minister, Stephen Smith, told viewers that both governments are working toward a common border - without Immigrations and Customs processing. Mr Smith says that both Australian and New Zealand governments hope to see some progress within the year. It's a promise that TVNZ interviewer Guyon Espiner didn't take for granted, pointing out that it's been talked about since 1992.

The following TVNZ 'Q+A' interview also covers Fiji's ailing economy, a possible ANZAC quick-reaction force to the Pacific, and a call for transparency in China's military development.
