Claim of Fiji roadmap to democracy debunked
Updated
The leader of Fiji's military regime billed his speech as his roadmap to democracy, but - in fact - he put off work on a new constitution until 2012. Commodore Bainimarama also appealed to Fiji's neighbours to re-engage with his country, and detailed his economic agenda in a bid to win support from financial institutions. But his efforts are likely to be rejected as they ignore international calls to return to democracy as soon as possible.
Australia Network's Jim Middleton asked Fijian political specialist Brij Lal from the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at Australian National University whether there was anything new in Commodore Bainimarama's address.
