Concerns Solomons forgiveness law may harm relations

A leading community organisation in Solomon Islands fears that the proposed 'Forgiveness Bill' may in fact set the healing process back. Draft legislation is likely to go to cabinet in September. National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace Minister Sam Iduri has told parliament that in the lead-up community consultation will occur. He says the bill will provide amnesty for those appearing before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which begins its hearings later this year.

Chair of the Solomon Island's branch of Transparency International, Bob Pollard, says the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will assist in healing while the Forgiveness Bill could be an affront to those who suffered during the civil war.
