Fiji watcher defends Commonwealth role

The Commonwealth's role over Fiji has been defended by a long-time watcher of that country's politics. The Commonwealth came in for criticism last week by the Royal Commonwealth Society which was formed 140 years ago to "promote imperial affairs.' The Society surveyed over 6000 people from seven commonwealth countries -- none of which were from the Pacific -- the survey found that many doubted the relevance of the Commonwealth.
