The undercutting of Fiji's traditional chiefs

A prominent regional specialist says the traditional role of chiefs in Fijian society is on the wane. The Australian National University's Dr Brij Lal says although compromised by political interference, the Great Council of Chiefs still has considerable powers under the abrogated constitution. But he says coup leader and Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has effectively sidelined the Chiefs - and is trying to reform the council in a way that suits him self.
