Preliminary work begins for Solomons reconciliation commission
Updated
Church communities, women's groups, and young people in Solomon Islands could soon be working closely with people who committed crimes during lethal ethnic violence nine years ago. The community groups have attended a workshop in Guadalcanal held to select people to assist the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and similar seminars are planned for Malaita. Those chosen will help to explain the Commission's overall aims to local communities, and assist with identifying people who may be called to appear before the hearings when they start in October.
The Commission's deputy chief executive, David Tuhanuku says some of the perpetrators of the unrest are involved in the workshops, and says they're a test for all involved.
