Cook Islands roads among world's most dangerous

Updated August 31, 2009 07:05:23

The World Health Organisation says the Cook Islands has the second-highest road toll, per capita, in the world. The actual numbers aren't high; there were five deaths in 2007 when the WHO did its survey, and there've been six so far this year. But what it means is that out of 178 countries studied, only roads in the east African nation of Eritrea are statistically more deadly. The Cook Islands Road Safety Council says many of the deaths are motorcyclists who've ignored a two-year-old law to wear a helmet.
