NZ uni to boost number of Maori health professionals

One of New Zealand's top universities is launching a special program to encourage Maori high school students to become health professionals. Otago University in Dunedin, which has an internationally recognised medical school, is launching the Tu Kahika program to support up to 20 Maori students.

The name is a reference to the Kahikatea tree, which grows strong when surrounded by others. Darryn Russell says that action is needed to boost the number of Maori health professionals in New Zealand, which is well below their proportion of the population.
