American Samoa is reporting up to twenty deaths as a result of the tsunami, with coastal villages reportedly devastated. The Governor, Togiola Tulafono, who is in Hawaii at the moment, is returning to the territory later tonight aboard a US Coastguard aircraft. He's been in talks with US federal disaster authorities today, arranging government assistance. Solo Ali'i Fa'alepo, director of the Governor's office in Hawaii says that it's been difficult to coordinate the response to the disaster because phone lines in American Samoa have been cut.
