In 2007, despite overwhelming public opposition, the former Labour Government of Helen Clark passed a law essentially banning parents from smacking their children. New Zealand has one of the worst child abuse death rates in the OECD and supporters of the anti smacking legislation say it brings the country into line with the UN convention on the rights the child. But groups opposed like Family First, a non political group in New Zealand, say it makes criminal out of good parents.
