Founding member of New Caledonia's Future Together Party resigns

A founding member of New Caledonia's Future Together party - Didier Leroux - has resigned in opposition to calls for the party to unite with other anti-independence parties under the banner of the ruling French party, the UMP. The suggestion was made by the pro-French leader, Pierre Frogier, earlier this week and backed by another co-founder of the Future Together party, Harold Martin. But the idea has angered Mr Leroux, who says it goes against the founding principles of their party, which secured them power from 2004 until 2008 . . . when a number of members split from the party to form the rival Caledonia Together. He's disappointed that Mr Martin publicly supported the idea, without consulting the rest of the party first.
