Claims fossil fuel subsidies are counterproductive
Updated
A coalition of environmental groups calling on the G20 to abolish fossil fuels is disappointed with the outcome of this weekend's gathering of finance ministers in Scotland. The so-called Green Economy Coalition, which includes the International Institute for Environment and Development, Consumers International, IUCN and the International Institute for Sustainable Development IISD had been urging the G20 to phase out these subsidies as soon as possible. However, the G20 finance ministers failed to come up with a plan on how industrialised nations could help developing countries combat climate change, and Australia's treasurer, Wayne Swan, insisted that it was premature to be putting figures on the costs of tackling climate change.
