First open ocean conservation zone applauded
Updated
Scientists are hailing a decision to declare the world's first zone to protect the marine life of the open ocean with a new reserve covering almost 60,000 square kilometres of the Southern Ocean, to the far south of the Falkland Islands.
The declaration closes off the zone to commercial fishing, protecting important cold-water species including the patagonian tooth-fish, icefish and krill.
