City council calls for Solomon Cup to be scrapped
Updated
The Solomon Islands Football Federation has been asked to abandon the remaining two weeks of the national soccer tournament, the Solomon Cup. Honiara City Council has written to the federation, concerned that a violent outbreak of soccer hooliganism will be repeated.
They say they are concerned about security at matches after a thousand supporters attending the Honiara-Malaita clash on Saturday rioted, burning down two buildings including a shop in nearby Chinatown. However, the football federation's chief executive officer, Eddie Ngava, says they have organised extra police officers for upcoming games and will not be calling off the Cup.
