Conservation blueprint for Pacific sharks

Updated November 20, 2009 10:03:27

The Pacific's key regional conservation groups have established a plan of action for the management of sharks and stingrays.

The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme recently launched the Pacific Islands Regional Plan of Action on Sharks.

The groups say least 80 species of sharks and rays live within the Pacific Islands region. Around half of these species are considered to be highly migratory, therefore it is an obligation by the international community to better manage them. Due to their low productivity and long life span, these species are particularly vulnerable to overexploitation.
