High-tech material in voyaging canoes defended

The use of modern materials in the construction of traditional-style Polynesian ocean-going canoes is being defended by the company which has made the sails for the project.

Six double-hulled voyaging canoes are being built as part of the Vaka Pacific fleet which will re-create history by sailing between French Polynesia and Hawaii. The hulls are constructed from fibreglass and resin, and sails are made of dacron, but on special occasions traditional flax sails made in Samoa will be used.
