New Zealand to hit local farmers with emissions tax

Updated November 20, 2009 10:03:26

New Zealand farmers have congratulated the Australian government for excluding agriculture from its planned emissions trading scheme - something the NZ government is imposing locally.

Don Nicolson, who heads New Zealand's chief farm lobby group, Federated Farmers, says by including agriculture in its own scheme it is the only country in the world to do so. The NZ emissions trade is set to come into place mid-next year, and Mr Nicholson says that could put local farmers out of business.
