Offer to re-open PNG asylum-seeker detention center

Updated November 20, 2009 17:40:03

The governor of Papua New Guinea's Manus Province is backing the idea of an Australian government built detention centre in his province being re-opened. The Manus Island centre, at Lombrun, could be returned to its original purpose quickly to help Australia cope with an influx of people trying to get into the country by boat. The centre was built in 2001 as part of the Australian government's Pacific Solution, was closed in 2004, and is now used as a PNG defence force base.
