Australia seals climate change legislation
Updated
The Australian government has sealed a political deal which it hopes will get its long-delayed climate change legislation through Parliament. The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says its action in the national interest, to begin protecting Australia from climate change, while protecting Australia's economy and jobs. After five weeks of negotiations, Canberra has agreed to give Billions more dollars in compensation to the country's biggest polluters, mainly the coal and electricity industries, in exchange for decisive Opposition votes in the Senate. Green activists are horrified though, saying the government's deliberately turned its back on the developing world and future generations.
