Tongan democracy debate given plenty of publicity
Updated
The Tongan government is saturating the media to make sure its people follow the parliamentary debate on huge changes to the country's political system. The Kingdom's Legislative Assembly is debating the report of the Constitution and Electoral Commission, which is recommending changes to make Tonga's monarchy more democratic and representative of its people.
The report specifically recommends curtailing some of the powers of the monarch - something which King George Tupou V has personally suggested. Tonga's Minister of Information, Eseta Fusitua, says the parliamentary debate is being given the widest possible publicity.
