Capital at risk if tsunami hits Tongan island
Updated
A review committee has heard that Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, is at great risk if a tsunami hits the country's main island of Tongatapu. That's the concern of Ofa Fa'anunu, the Director of the Tonga Meteorological Service, who is in charge of the committee looking at possible changes to the way the Kingdom prepares for a possible tsunami. Just two days ago, a magnitude 6.8 quake hit less than 200 kilometres from the capital, but no tsunami was generated.
Mr Fa'anunu says that after the recent tsunami which hit both Samoa's and the Tongan island of Niuatoputapu, the government wants to improve the country's ability to respond to such a potential disaster.
