A new approach to pulling people out of poverty is about to be tested in Papua New Guinea's remote Southern Highlands.

The charity Business for Millenium Development, or B4MD, is hoping to capitalise on a massive liquefied natural gas project that will be built in the province.

It is planning to help local villagers grow and sell fresh fruit and vegetables to the workers who will soon be based in the area.

B4MD's chief executive officer Mark Ingram told PNG correspondent Liam Fox the idea is to get the business community involved in alleviating poverty.
